Your HP printer feeds paper through but prints nothing? Blank pages usually point to an ink, cartridge, or driver issue. Follow these steps.

Step 1: Check Ink or Toner Levels

  • Open HP Smart app → check ink/toner levels
  • Or on the printer display: go to Ink Levels or Supplies Status
  • If any cartridge is empty or very low, replace it

Step 2: Check Cartridge Installation

  • Open the cartridge access door
  • Remove each cartridge and check that the orange protective tape has been removed from the nozzle area
  • Reinstall cartridges firmly until they click into place
  • Make sure you're using the correct cartridges for your HP model

Step 3: Clean the Printhead

  1. On the printer display, go to SetupTools or Printer Maintenance
  2. Select Clean Printhead or Clean Cartridges
  3. The printer will run a cleaning cycle (takes 1-2 minutes)
  4. Print a test page after cleaning
  5. If still blank, run the cleaning cycle 2 more times

Step 4: Align the Printhead

  1. On printer display: SetupToolsAlign Printhead
  2. The printer will print an alignment page
  3. If it has a scanner, it will scan the page automatically to calibrate

Step 5: Print a Diagnostic Report

  1. On the printer: SetupReportsPrint Quality Report
  2. If the report shows missing colors or streaks, the printhead or cartridge may need replacement
  3. If the report is also blank, the issue is likely a hardware problem with the printhead

Step 6: Check Print Settings

  • In the application you're printing from, check that the text/content isn't white on white
  • Check that you're not printing a blank page range (e.g., page 5 of a 3-page document)
  • Make sure the correct paper size is selected (Letter vs A4)

Common Causes by HP Series:

DeskJet/ENVY (Inkjet): Dried printhead, empty cartridges, protective tape not removed. LaserJet (Laser): Empty toner, toner seal strip not pulled, drum unit issue. Smart Tank: Air in ink tubes — run multiple cleaning cycles.
