HP Printer Showing Offline — How to Get It Back Online

Your HP printer shows "Offline" even though it's turned on and connected? This is one of the most common HP printer issues. Follow these steps to get it back online.

Step 1: Check the Basics

  • Make sure your HP printer is powered ON (green/blue light solid, not blinking)
  • Check the USB cable is firmly connected at both ends, or WiFi is connected
  • Restart your printer — turn it off, wait 30 seconds, turn it back on
  • Restart your computer

Step 2: Set HP Printer as Default

  1. Open SettingsDevicesPrinters & Scanners
  2. Find your HP printer in the list
  3. Click on it → click Manage
  4. Click Set as default
  5. Uncheck "Let Windows manage my default printer" at the bottom

Step 3: Remove "Use Printer Offline" Setting

  1. Go to Control PanelDevices and Printers
  2. Right-click your HP printer → select See what's printing
  3. Click the Printer menu at the top
  4. If "Use Printer Offline" is checked, uncheck it
  5. Also click Cancel All Documents to clear the queue

Step 4: Restart the Print Spooler Service

  1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, press Enter
  2. Scroll down to Print Spooler
  3. Right-click → Restart
  4. Make sure Startup type is set to Automatic

Step 5: Update HP Printer Driver

  1. Press Windows + X → select Device Manager
  2. Expand Print queues
  3. Right-click your HP printer → Update driver
  4. Select Search automatically for drivers
  5. Restart your computer after the update

Step 6: Remove and Re-add the Printer

  1. Go to SettingsDevicesPrinters & Scanners
  2. Click your HP printer → Remove device
  3. Restart your computer
  4. Go back to Printers & Scanners → click Add a printer
  5. Windows will detect your HP printer — select it and follow the setup
