Paper jams are the most common HP printer issue. Here's how to safely clear them without damaging your printer.
Step 1: Turn Off the Printer
- • Press the Power button to turn off the printer
- • Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer
- • Wait 30 seconds — this releases the rollers
Step 2: Remove Jammed Paper from the Input Tray
- Remove all loose paper from the input tray
- Look inside the input tray area for stuck paper
- Gently pull any jammed paper straight out with both hands
- Never pull at an angle — this can tear the paper and leave pieces inside
Step 3: Check Inside the Cartridge Area
- Open the cartridge access door or front panel
- Move the cartridge carriage gently to the left to check for paper
- Remove any torn paper pieces you find
- Check behind the cartridges — small paper bits can hide there
Step 4: Check the Output Tray and Rear Access
- Check the output tray (where paper comes out) for stuck paper
- If your HP printer has a rear access door, open it
- Look for any jammed paper and gently pull it out
- For LaserJet models, check the fuser area — be careful, it may be hot
Step 5: Reload Paper and Test
- Fan the paper stack to prevent pages sticking together
- Load paper neatly, aligned with the guides
- Adjust the paper width guides to fit snugly (not too tight)
- Don't overload — stay below the maximum fill line
- Plug in and turn on the printer
- Print a test page
Prevent Future Paper Jams
- • Use fresh, unwrinkled paper (not damp or curled)
- • Don't mix paper sizes or types in the same tray
- • Clean the paper pickup rollers monthly with a lint-free cloth
- • Store paper flat in a dry location
Model-Specific Notes:
DeskJet 2700/3700: Paper feeds from the back — check the rear slot. OfficeJet Pro: Check the ADF (document feeder) for jams too. LaserJet: Wait for the fuser to cool before touching. ENVY 6000: Open the front door and look below the cartridges.
